Have you ever wanted traffic to travel slower through your neighborhood? Is there an intersection that feels dangerous to cross on foot or by bike? Is there a spot where traffic crashes frequently occur?

The way our streets are designed determines the health and safety of our neighborhoods. For too long, streets have only been designed to move cars as fast as possible. This often means streets aren’t comfortable places for people to walk, bike, or sit on your stoop visiting with your neighbors.

The results are decreased transportation choices and less life on the streets. But small changes can make a big impact. The key is understanding what choices are possible, and how to advocate for them to occur.

In our new program, Shifting Power, Bikemore is providing livable streets advocacy training to everyday citizens — ensuring that neighborhoods are equipped to challenge the status quo and build power to create change in the built environment. In this four hour free workshop, you will:

  • Learn the basics of traffic engineering and urban planning and know what tools are available to address your issues.

  • Understand the relationship between street design and public health, and how an unsafe street may be making your neighborhood less healthy.

  • How to navigate existing power structures in our City and your neighborhood that sometimes fear change and maintain the status quo.

  • Learn how to lead a community master planning process and get larger street projects in the Capital Improvement Process.

  • Connect to community resources that can support your efforts to create healthy, safe streets.

  • Meet other folks from across the city also interested in building a Baltimore that is safe to travel on foot, bike, or transit.

Taking the mystery out of how our streets get designed shifts the power back into the hands of everyday citizens. Making sure that every neighborhood has advocates well versed in transportation and land use planning, means that when changes do occur residents are ready to advocate for projects that will make our streets healthier and safer.

This workshop is free but is capped at 30 participants. So register early below to ensure your spot. Can’t attend this one? We will be offering another workshop in the Fall. Want Bikemore staff to visit your neighborhood and give an abbreviated version of this workshop to your neighbors? Send us an email to learn more.
